  • Locate and evaluate masses, cancers
  • Evaluate blood vessels
  • Assess extent of injuries
  • Monitor effectiveness of treatments

Why Mission Memorial Hospital Needs a CT Scanner

CT is the standard investigation for most conditions.

Mission Memorial Hospital is the only Fraser Health Authority hospital west of Hope that does not have a CT

  • He had been at a graduation party drinking
  • He is otherwise healthy on no medications
  • Diagnose infections, muscle disorders, fractures
  • He smells of alcohol, is drowsy, only responds if stimulated
Is he ’just drunk’ or does he have a significant head injury?
  • He needs an urgent CT scan

  • Diagnosis of subdural hematoma made
  • Emergent transfer to Neurosurgery at RCH.

Possibly saving several hours and reducing risk of permanent brain damage

Next Case

76 year old female presents to Mission Memorial Hospital ER with:
  • 7 days of increasing abdominal discomfort, bloating.
  • 10 kg weight loss over six months.
  • Spontaneous vomiting for one day.
  • No BM for 4 days.
  • Exam shows a thin dehydrated, unwell female with a bloated abdomen, possibly enlarged liver.
She has an intestinal obstruction, possible cancer and needs surgery.
  • She needs a CT scan.

The CT confirmed the diagnosis and allowed surgeon to plan the procedure. The Surgeon will not see a patirnt without a CT.

Last case

  • A 66 year-old male presents to Mission Memorial Hospital ER with severe pain mid lower back, sudden onset. Not worse with moving. Some nausea and some pain in the mid abdomen.
  • He has atherosclerosis and diabetes and is being treated with appropriate medication.
  • He moves well. No back tenderness or tight muscles. Tender mid abdomen with pulsating mass. Mild anemia.
He may have a bleeding abdominal aortic aneurysm and needs an urgent CT and possible surgery.

  • Emergent transfer Vascular Surgery.

Saves several hours and reduce risk of severe blood loss, even death.
